Civil Society Committee meet Minister Chris Said


The Civil Society Committee within the MCESD meets Minister Chris Said.

The civil society committee (CSC) will meet Minister Said on Friday 8th February 2013 for the first time since this committee was enacted by law to discuss the operations of this new committee and to present to the Minister the first list of issues that the committee considers to be of National importance and which need to be discussed within MCESD.

The points to be covered are the role of the NGO’s, education , the economy, persons with disability, environment , health, agriculture and fisheries and rural environment.

The Civil Society Committee (CSC) has been restructured by ACT NO IV of 2012 and LN 206 of 2012. The CSC is made up of representatives from 12 sectors namely, consumer affairs; health, elderly and pensioners; gender equality; professions; youth and students; sports; agriculture, rural and fisheries, environmental protection and improvement, including the protection of animals, culture, arts and national heritage; persons with disability; education, social and community advancement; local councils; and other voluntary organisations have been working on formulating joint recommendations and opinions.

The Committee held its first meeting on 28.08.2012 and has since met monthly. The scope of this committee is an inclusive one with a  lot of emphasis on active representation from all the respective sectors discussing issues of relevance to society, social wellbeing and the Voluntary Sectors which they represent  The Chairperson Benjamin Rizzo, and the Vice Chairperson John Portelli also represent the Civil Society Committee’s perspective and opinions within the  Malta Council for Economic and Social Development together with Unions, Employers and the Gozo Regional Committee delegates.
